Note | Charles enlisted in the US Army Air Corps and was stationed in Alaska for two years. When he came back, people thought he was “a little off” because the area had its worst winter in years and he would work outside in t-shirt and shorts. He worked in the propane delivery industry for over 30 years, even owning his own delivery company. In the recession under President Jimmy Carter, he was forced to sell his company due to the fact that the government dictate d what he could sell his product for but not what his suppliers could sell the product to him. He was forced to sell gas for 10 cents per gallon less than what it cost him, after about 6 months of selling a million gallons per month he could no longer stay in business. For a few months after they were married the family in Blue Springs, Missouri until discovering that the reason Martin was sick a lot was be cause (according to the doctor) “he was homesick for his grandparents”. They then moved to Adrian, Missouri into a cinder-block house that Charles built. In about 1962 they sold the house and moved to a home on the corner of 6th and Houston across the street from the school. Charles modified the home by having another, two story, house moved in and added to the existing structure. In the 1980's Charles built another home on a 10 acre lot outside Adrian. |
